Football! Football! Football!

Brady is back bitch!

It's been a long, treacherous voyage this offseason.  We've suffered through tragedy, triumph and bad baseball.  But we're here.  Finally.  It's opening night for the NFL.

Today will be dedicated solely to National Football League, unless Allen Iverson talks to God again and backs out of his deal with Memphis because He was having second thoughts.

Here is where I'll apologize for not finishing the NFL Preview guide.  Next year, I'll do a better job of not sucking.  Also, here is where I make up for it by spouting off with venom-filled sentences of why your team sucks and won't win the Super Bowl.

Oh, don't give me that look, Mr. Merriman.

  • Jacksonville: The more touches Mo-Jo-Drew gets, the less productive he's been.  Fred Taylor is gone and Tony Boselli never developed the way you wanted him to, did he?  Oh well.  He was always productive in Madden except for the one time he got injured even though I had turned injuries off.
  • Green Bay: The Packers switched to a 3-4 defense and had its offense clicking on all cylinders this preseason.  Based on that, Doug Gottlieb has you winning the Super Bowl this season.  Are you erally excited that a college basketball expert has pegged your team to be the NFL champs?  I wouldn't be.
  • San Francisco: The 49ers two quarterbacks don't measure up to one good quarterback.  Frank Gore can't do it all, but for the sake of my fantasy team, he better.
  • Buffalo: I've got Trent Edwards starting in Week 5 while Jay Cutler rests his arm.  I just need one week out of you Edwards, so here's hoping T.O. doesn't turn that team to a train wreck.
  • Denver: The Broncos' QB is no longer Jay Cutler. Instead it is a neckbeardless Captain Neckbeard.  You good folks have fun with that.
  • Washington: The Nationals suck. The Wizards suck. The Capitals choked when they needed a win the most. My President Is Black ... and so is the QB ... for now.
  • New Orleans:  Sean Payton's kid is working on a movie based on an XBOX game.  Script experts realized it was a fictional piece when the script had the Saints making tackles and playing defense.
  • Houston: The chic pick for NFL experts.  Ask guys on the Texans, and they'll tell you that if it weren't for Andre Johnson, they'd give the Lions a run for their money -- of course that's assuming William Clay Ford hasn't blown it on Detroit's other floundering franchise.
  • San Diego: If Merriman hit ball carriers and quarterbacks like he (allegedly) did to Tila Tequila, the Chargers would be a Super Bowl contender.
  • Tampa Bay: You're not winning jack when your first-round pick is buried in the the depth chart.
  • Philadelphia: Good news: Mike Vick will be a distraction to defenders. Bad news: Mike Vick will be a distraction to his teammates.
  • Carolina: Football in Carolina is just an appetizer until Tar Heels basketball resumes.
  • Cleveland: The Browns had to choose between an Oregon State Beaver and a Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the team's starting quarterback. I usually side with beaver.  But that's just me.
  • Minnesota: They've got Brett Favre as their quarterback.  Too bad it's not Favre from 1997.
  • Baltimore: I'd say something mean about Ray Lewis, but...
  • Atlanta: Have you seen the Falcons' schedule.  They'll be lucky to break even in 2009.
  • Indianapolis: Tony Dungy has spent more time mentoring Mike Vick than Peyton Manning. That can't be good for the Colts' chances.
  • New York Giants: I won't say anything bad about Brandon Jacobs -- mostly because he's a Saluki -- but I will say bad things about an offense whose best wide receiver is in priosn.
  • Arizona: It's the Cardinals. Can you imagine them being in the Super Bowl back-to-back years?  That's more of a stretch than the Cubs winning a playoff game.
  • Tennessee: Things from Tennessee that don't suck: Justin Timberlake, Young Buck, Memphis BBQ. Things from Tennessee that do suck: Criminals, having your car busted into, the Titans.
  • Pittsburgh:  I have several close friends/acquaintances that are Steelers fans.  That doesn't mean they're getting off scot-free.  They want to assume the Titletown mantra after winning the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup this season, but you cannot have that title if your team doesn't have a professional basketball or baseball team.  And no, the Pirates don't count.
  • New England: The Bears will meet the Patriots in the Super Bowl, however, Tom Brady will miss the game. Not because of injury, but because he'll be so busy with his special lady friend, he'll forget the big game even exists.

Why Your Team Won't Beat The Bears In The Super Bowl: Oakland Raiders

NFL: Houston Texans at Oakland Raiders
I'm afraid to create a caption, so I won't.

The Oakland Raiders once were a team committed to excellence. Now, they're just a team committed to giving guys like me column fodder and punch lines when every other area dries up.

While many guys have a special lady they go to when times are rough, AFC West teams just try to bide their time until the Raiders pop up on their schedule. If the Washington Nationals are baseball's starter girlfriend, that must make the Raiders the NFL's dirty lil' thing on the side.

And with a status like that, there is no way the Oakland Raiders even have a chance to knock off your projected Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.

1. Even 'Runaround Sue' will be good for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Saying that the Raiders' rush defense was porous would be kin to saying baseball has a small steroids problem. Oakland allowed opposing offenses to rush for 2,555 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Looking at the running backs they'll face this year, it won't likely get better. The list of rushing roulette is as follows: L.T. & Sproles (twice), Larry Johnson NFL (twice), Brandon Jacobs, Thomas Jones, Marion Barber, Willie Parker and Clinton Portis. That's at least 2,000 yards allowed there with games against Houston, Denver, Cleveland and Baltimore.

2. Darrius Heyward-Bey. Hayward-Bey will have less catches than the Bears' top two receivers. Book it.

3. The QB Conundrum. Oakland thinks it has two quarterbacks with youngster JaMarcus Russell and aging hipster Jeff Garcia. But remember kids, if you have two quarterbacks, it really means that you have none.

4. Chaz Schilens. Not only does Oakland have a guy named Chaz on their roster, he's at the top of the WR depth chart. Teams with guys named Chaz don't win Super Bowls. Plain and simple.

5. Al Davis. What' more to say about the worst owner in sports. He lives in the past and I'm surprised Oakland fans haven't tried a lil' coup d'etat to get a once proud franchise back. Maybe their waiting for Billy Beane to chemically engineer his football counterpart out of scratch.

NOTE: There is not one Oakland Raider worth drafting on your fantasy team this year. If you get stuck with one, either join another league and pretend that one doesn't exist or start prepping for the 2010 draft.

Why Your Team Won't Beat The Bears In The Super Bowl: Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp
Can't wait to read Ocho Cinco tweet about this grab!

My cousin is a huge Cincinnati Bengals fan and one of my biggest supporters. After he finds out about this blog, only one of those things might be true.

After going 4-11-1 last year, the Bengals have to do more re-tooling than Tim Allen ever had to do on Home Improvement. Their offense struggled without Carson Palmer. Their defense was suspect. And at times, their players were suspects.

Yeah, you can expect some jokes about criminals here. You can also expect not seeing the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl.

Why?

1. Cedric Benson. He swears he will make the Bears pay for all the wrong they've done him. But the Bears already paid, and by paid I mean they've given Benson lots of guaranteed money to score 10 touchdowns in 35 while playing for Chicago.

Benson's best moves can be found on a boat, not on the gridiron.

2. Marvin Lewis = Coaching Fraud. Remember he was going to bring a tough-minded defensive effort and discipline to a team that laughed in the face of authority just before being escorted into the back seat of a police cruiser? Yeah, I do too. The Bengals' defense hasn't shown many signs of improvement since Lewis took over the sinking ship.

The problem is, the ship is still sinking. The good news for Lewis is that he isn't the worst coach in town.

Enter stage right: Dusty Baker.

3. Week 7 vs. Chicago. The Bengals have a chance to prove what they're worth as they host Da Bears on October 25. If Lewis can field a full team without convicted felons this deep into the season, he deserves Coach of the Year honors.

4. Twitter. People might blame Chad Johnson Ochocinco, but the social networking micro blog dealie will be to blame for all of the Bengals' problems. Why didn't Chad catch that pass? He was checking his Twitter for updates from other games. Why doesn't Cedric Benson score touchdowns? Because he's afraid of the backlash he'd recieve via Twitter if he did an end zone dance. Where's (insert Bengal player in trouble with the law here)? Had you checked his Twitter page, you would have known he needed someone to post bail for him.

5. No one will care. Everyone knows Ohio's most popular professional football team is the Ohio State Buckeyes. (Friend whispers in my ear) Wait, you mean they're not supposed to pay players at The Ohio State. I thought they were a pro team. That's why they get paid handsomely. (More whispers) Oh, what Maurice Clarrett received was illegal.

Yeah, you didn't think I'd leave this blog without a jab at tOSU, did ya?

But if you happen to get stuck with a Cincinnati Bengal on your fantasy team it better be quarterback Carson Palmer. He'll be a bargain because people won't trust him coming back off injury. I will. When healthy, he averaged 28 touchdown passes a year in his last three healthy years. And there's plenty of time for Palmer to get healthy this season with games against Denver (Week 1), Green Bay (Week 2), Cleveland (Week 4, 12), Houston (Week 6), Detroit (Week 13) and Kansas City (Week 16).

Why Your Team Won't Beat The Bears In The Super Bowl: New York Jets

New York Jets Minicamp
At least Jets fans know this quarterback won't be retiring after the season.

On Nov. 23, 2008, the New York Jets defeated the then-unbeaten Tennessee Titans 34-13 and were set to put the rest of their season into cruise control. Their quarterback was firing on all cylinders, their defense was at the top of its game and Eric Mangini was starting to look like the genius everyone made it out to be.

Then, the next five weeks happened. The Jets went 1-4 after toppling the Titans, with its only victory coming in a 31-27 squeaker against the Buffalo Bills. The passing offense fell apart. As did the defense. In Week 17, Brett Favre's arm basically came undone as it symbolized how quickly the Jets' season fell apart.

But hope springs eternal in the greater New York region as the Jets welcome a new coach, a new defense, a new quarterback and his very attractive lady friend.

However, it just won't be enough to be better than the Chicago Bears, this year's Super Bowl champion.

1. The Ryan Family Coaching Tree. I like Rex Ryan, a lot. From a media member's standpoint, he gives good quotes. From a fan's standpoint, he plays hard-hitting, aggressive defense. From a Southern Illinois University Carbondale alumnus' point of view, he makes me happy because his defense helped former Saluki Bart Scott become a very wealthy man. (P.S. Saluki Way needs your support, Mr. Scott).

Yet, after his father's mediocre run as a head coach, it makes me wonder whether or not young Rex can cut it in the NFL. 55-55-1 won't cut it anywhere, let alone New York City. For every Mike Smith, there's a Butch Davis.

2. Got "Stick 'Em" for your receivers? The Jets have had some pretty good receivers if recent memory serves me correct, for Laveranues Coles, Santana Moss and Jerricho Cotchery have each been pretty good pass catchers in their time. But only Cotchery remains and if you don't count Thomas Jones coming out of the backfield, I'm hard-pressed to be impressed with Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, Wallace Wright and Huey Whittaker.

Unless one of the role players steps up in a big way (Dustin Keller?), Joe Namath could be slinging the pigskin and it wouldn't matter.

3. Favre is gone, there's no pressure to succeed. As Brett Favre goes, so goes the media circus. Now, who's going to follow the team with the drama queen now out of the picture. Chris Mortensen will no longer be at door steps. John Clayton will no longer be hiding inside trash dumpsters. Sean Salisbury will no longer be showing his junk to cheerleaders.

On second thought, maybe the circus leaving town is a blessing in disguise after all...

4. D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Dude's got the coolest name in all of football, but Jets fans should heed this warning. The last time the media slurped a team because of one player's cool name, Chief Kickingstallionsims and the Alabama State Hornets were one-and-done in the NCAA Tournament.

Just sayin'.

5. They play in the AFC East. Unless you've been living under a rock, or one of Rick Majerus' chins, the division the Jets play is stacked at the top like Jessica Simpson in a push-up bra. At 10-6, the Patriots didn't even make the playoffs last year. And the Bills will be better until T.O. turns on the team during the playoff stretch.

But if you happen to get stuck with a New York Jet on your fantasy team it better be running back Thomas Jones. Who? Mike Thomas Jones! Mr. Jones has rushed for at least 1,100 yards for each of the past four seasons. Last year, he picked up 13 rushing touchdowns, a career high.

Why Your Team Won't Beat The Bears In The Super Bowl: Seattle Seahawks

Chicago Bears v Seattle Seahawks
In 2007, the Seahawks allowed Cedric Benson to score a rushing touchdown. He would then go on to score with girls on a boat.

Seattle doesn't have much going for it these days. Grunge is dead. Their baseball team (though 56-52) might as well be as it is as close to the first place Angels (9 games back) as it does to the last place A's (9 games up). And their basketball team is non-existent.

On top of that, they have to watch the Seattle Seahawks play football 16 times per season. And to make matters worse, I'm breaking some news in the Pacific Northwest.

Kurt Cobain is dead. And your Seattle Seahawks don't have a prayer against the eventual Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.

1. Week 3: A West Coast banging Dr. Dre would be proud of. The Seahawks will get their shot at the Bears on Sept. 27 and should be riding the high after pounding the Rams in Week 1 and maybe sneaking a win past the up-and-coming 49ers. But then they have to face the Bears. Chicago should be coming off an Earth-moving victory against the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers, but might find themselves looking forward to a Week 4 thrashing of the Detroit Lions. And what better than beating a bird as a pregame feast for dumping Detroit.

Prediction: Jay Cutler will throw for 457 yards and 3 touchdowns, and that is in between creating an enitrely new offense Ron Turner couldn't screw up.

2. T.J. Houshyourmamacuziaintyodaddy. Life is going to be different for "The Housh" in 2009. Matt Hasselbeck is no Carson Palmer, nor is he as cute as Elizabeth. Nate Burelson is no Chad Johnson Ochocinco.

And didn't you know? His Madden ranking is in the pooper, according to him. Stay away from this future fantasy flop.

3. Seattle's running game might give you the runs. Julius Jones. Justin Forsett. T.J. Duckett. This trio of running backs doesn't deserve a witty, well-written punchline.

4. Um, you got two guys named T.J. Won't that get confusing. Let the record show that no team in NFL history has won a Super Bowl with two guys named T.J. on the same roster.

Just saying.

5. Seattle: The cradle of depressed civilization. Let's think about it now, folks. Grunge is in the rearview mirror. So are the SuperSonics. So are the Mariners' best days -- like when Griffey, A-Rod and the Big Unit roamed the dome. The most exciting thing about the town might be its soccer team.

Oh, and maybe Starbucks.

But if you happen to get stuck with a Seattle Seahawk on your fantasy team it better be T.J. Houshmazilla. Yeah, I bashed him earlier, but look at the defenses he goes against this season. St. Louis (Weeks 1, 12), San Francisco (Weeks 2, 13), Jacksonville (Week 5), Arizona (Week 6), Detroit (Week 9), Minnesota (Week 12), Houston (Week 14), Green Bay (Week 16). All of these teams ranked below average against the pass. That's 13 of 16 opponents. Maybe "The Housh" made a half decent decision to play in Seattle after all -- of course -- you have to deal with the non-Pacman issued rain.

Why Your Team Won't Beat The Bears In The Super Bowl: Kansas City Chefs Chiefs

Sports - October 07, 2007
These young ladies won't have much to cheer about if/when the Bears get their claws on the Chiefs

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs struggled to get through a season in which it only won two games. One of which came against the Denver Broncos, who choked their ways out of a sure playoff bid. The other against the Oakland Raiders, who hope The Summer of Celebrity Deaths strikes Al Davis sooner rather than later.

But these aren't last year's Chiefs. Like the Bears' first two victims, Kansas City has a new head coach ... and also has a new quarterback and offensive systems. Sounds great, but Kansas City also still has the Royals.

Sometimes you win. Other times you lose. Hey, at least you've still got BBQ right.

But in the end, since Matt Cassel can't hold Jay Cutler's jock strap, the Chiefs have no shot at beating the Bears at a game of 21 if they stayed at 20 -- let alone the Super Bowl.

1. Matt Cassel has no friends. Upon arriving in Kansas City, Cassel learned that his best pass-catching target was being shipped off to Atlanta to catch balls from Michael Vick Matt Ryan. In exchange, the Chiefs will find a way to not replentish that lost weaponry until next year's NFL Draft. No longer does Cassel have Randy Moss and Wes Welker to help him out. Instead, he is stuck with Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley.

The good news for Cassel is that he won't have to deal with Bradley for long as he is scheduled to have a season-ending injury any day now.

2. Calling it an unfavorable schedule would be saying it nicely. If the Chiefs didn't play in the AFC West, they would only have two winnable games: Weeks 15 and 16 against Cincinnati and Cleveland, respectively. But since they play in the same division as the Raiders, I can see this team winning at least four games this season.

Doubling your win total from the year before is cool in general, but not when last season's win total is two.

3. Defense is offensive. The Chiefs have seven opponents whose quarterbacks don't suck -- but aren't as good as Jay Cutler. When Travis Daniels is your shutdown corner, you know that as a Chiefs fan you'll be swilling a lot of Jack Daniels.

Zach Thomas could be productive if you remind him that former teammate Jason Taylor is banging his sister.

4. Larry Johnson will retire to pursue his true dreams. It won't be long until the NFL's Grandmama will try his hand on the hardwood in an attempt to be the second best Larry Johnson to ever lace 'em up. My money is on the Knicks shelling out a boatload of money for his services.

Just a hunch.

5. Want 'razzle dazzle'? I got it for ya! Back in the day, the Bears had an offensive coordinator named Gary Crowton who unleased an offensive onslaught against the Chiefs which rivaled something you would have seen straight out of Madden. Then-head coach Gunther Cunningham, who was one of the runner-ups to eventual head coach Dick Jauron, had this to say about the performance.

"They play razzle-dazzle football. After you get used to it once, after you see it on film once a game is played like this, now you know what they're all about. It's not confusing."

He was right, then, but he'd be hardpressed to stop a real quarterback.

But if you happen to get stuck with a Kansas City Chief on your fantasy team it better be back-up quarterback Tyler Thigpen. You know, just in case "something happens" to Matt Cassel. And by "something" I mean the eventual season-ending concussion he'll suffer when he realizes he has an offensive line that is allergic to protecting the quarterback.

Why Your Team Won't Beat Da Bears In The Super Bowl: The St. Louis Shams Rams

Rams-Bears
Last year, the Bears whooped on the Rams with Kyle Orton under center. Imagine what Jay Cutler could do...

Once upon a time, the St. Louis Rams (2-14 in 2008) were considered "The Greatest Show On Turf." Now, they are the biggest joke on the earth. Alright, maybe not, because that designation goes to the New York Mets. But I am convinced the Rams are the NFL's version of the Mets.

Like the Lions, they have a new coach. But since they have a lot of the same pieces of crap in place in 2009, they are more likely to battle it out with the Lions for the right to choose Tim Tebow No. 1 overall next year. Because that's what teams with joker front office types do, make bad decisions.

That's how they got here in the first place.

1. Marc Bulger will spend more time on his back than a Las Vegas hooker. Bulger has been sacked 142 times in the last three years and at some point, he has got to be thinking about a retirement plan or an escape plan. Either way, he's screwed. Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce are no longer targets to throw to. Options include Keenan Burton, Derek Stanley, Donnie Avery and Chad Lucas.

If I were Bulger, I'd rather throw to George Lucas and hope he can whip up some special effects and make the season in St. Louis not suck.

2. They have to play the Bears in the regular season -- outside. Dome teams hate playing outside and in the cold, which plays right into the hands of the eventual Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, who will host the Rams on Dec. 6 at Soldier Field.

And since we all know St. Louisans are allergic to frigid temperatures, I won't be surprised when Cutler throws for 400 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and takes the rest of the game off while watching Matt Forte run for 300 yards and a couple of scores in the second half.

3. Leonard Little and Tony LaRussa walk into a bar. Which one is the designated driver? Tony or Leonard? If the Cards host a playoff game in October when Little and the Rams are in town, I'd stay as far away from St. Louis as I possibly could. Unless, of course, I was a cop looking to fill a quota.

4. The Nellyville/Rams connection. Anyone notice that the Rams haven't been good since Nelly put out his last good album. The Rams are 46-66 since Nellyville dropped. Coincidence? I think not!

5. The Curse That Of The Boers & Bernstein Show. Sick of Kurt Warner and his wife's act in 2001, WSCR sports radio hosts Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein called on some vodoo lady to put a hex on Warner, his wife and the Rams. Turns out, the Rams lost the Super Bowl to upstart New England, who since then has built a dynasty of sorts.

But if you happen to get stuck with a St. Louis Ram on your fantasy team it better be place kicker Josh Brown. What? You want me to put Steven Jackson in here? Maybe if I was building a team on my XBOX, but until he proves that he can stay healthy, I'll pass. Besides, Brown will kick in domes nine times this upcoming season. Kickers + Domes = Sleepers.

Why Your Team Won't Beat Da Bears In The Super Bowl: The Cowardly Detroit Lions

Even PicApp refuses to acknowledge the Lions' existence.

Last season, the Detroit Lions became the first team in NFL history to lose each and every game of a 16-game schedule. This year, the Lions will attempt to repeat avoid that dubious feat.

The good news for the Lions is that they have a new coach, a new quarterback (whose GF has great cans) and even a new logo. The bad news for the Lions is that they play in Detroit and are still a franchise that hasn't fielded a winning season since 2000.

In more bad news for Detroit's footballers: they have to face Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears ... twice!

And this is why the Cowardly Detroit Lions won't beat Da Bears once (let alone in the Super Bowl) this upcoming season.

1. Matt Stafford's road beef will distract Brian Urlacher only for so long. By now, everyone knows that the Bears' star middle linebacker goes through road beef like Charlie Weis goes through Italian Beef. And sure, Stafford's chick with the stellar rack might distract Urlacher for just a moment, but then again, there will be 10 other defenders ready to pound Stafford -- then her. Then her friends.

2. They don't have Jay Cutler. While Stafford might be the savior, he won't likely last long behind an offensive line that's got more holes than Britney Spears' fishnets. Neither will Daunte Stallworth Culpepper. Detroit's only hope is that GM or Ford can engineer Drew Henson and Drew Stanton into one serviceable quarterback named Drew Henstantson. But we know how their efforts have been doing as of late.

3. An early unforgiving schedule will make what's left of the fans in the Lions den migrate over to Joe Louis Arena to see what the Red Wings are doing. There isn't an easy game through the first six weeks of the season, and knowing the Lions, they'll find a way to lose during their bye week. They've got winnable games against St. Louis (Nov. 1), Seattle (Nov. 8) and Cleveland (Nov. 22). If they find themselves 0-15 by the time their second meeting with the Bears rolls around, expect Cutler to throw for at least 700 yards and five touchdowns.

4. Barry Sanders is still retired. That means scenes like this will be few and far between for Lions fans.

5. Detroit is just engineered to fail. The economy sucks. Fernando Rodney as a closer sucks. Rich Rod sucks. The only things that don't suck in Detroit are the Red Wings and Eminem (whose last album kinda sucked) -- both of which haven't been relevant to most of America since the early 2000s.

But if you happen to get stuck with a Detroit Lion on your fantasy team it better be wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Because owning Chris Hannon, Eric Fowler or Steve Sanders will help you clinch a record that might end up being worse thatn the Lions' by season's end.

Coming Soon: Why Your Team Won't Beat Da Bears In The Super Bowl

Alright, so TBDS Late Night will be sidelined for about the next month as we attempt to preview the upcoming NFL season. But this isn't your ordinary, run-of-the-mill preview. Not by a long shot.

See, ever since the Chicago Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos, I have been convinced that Da Bears were Super Bowl bound. And with each passing day, I've grown more and more confident, to the point where I am ready to hitch my bandwagon to Cutler's Kids and say:

THE CHICAGO BEARS ARE GOING TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL!

There, I said it. And yes, the all-caps was necessary here.

Yours truly will run down every team that will fall short of Super Bowl glory at the expense of Da Bears.
