The Weekender: State Of Saluki Hoops Edition

The SIU men's basketball team has gone through several stages since Chris Lowery took over at his alma mater following the groundwork laid by Bruce Weber and Matt Painter.

To represent the phases of Saluki hoops, I dug deep into my archive of women that I wish I could be with but cannot because, in truth, I'm just a lonely blogger looking for someone special to spend my Valentine's Day weekend with.

Unfortunately, we will not be spending it with any of the ladies that will be featured in this blog.  If I'm lucky, the calendar will fast forward me to April to reconnect with my true love, baseball.

2004-05 27-8 :: Absolute Eye-Candy
Chris Lowery's first year at the helm was quite surprise as he rode Darren Brooks' second consecutive MVC Player of the Year award to glory.  SIU won the Valley's regular season title but lost to SMS in the Valley tournament after the team blew a 20-point lead.  Shortly after the loss, Saluki fans started the first known Fire Chris Lowery group on Facebook.

2005-06: 22-11 :: Overcoming the odds.

Mariah Carey has overcome her fair share of adversity, and so did this edition of the Saluki basketball team.  Without Darren Brooks and Stetson Hairston, SIU won the MVC Tournament for the first time since the Clinton Administration.

Southern did it by knocking off Bradley in the title game and unseating Patrick O'Bryant, who would would go on to be an O'Bust in the NBA.

2006-07:  29-7:  The pinnacle of the Chris Lowery Era.

Scarlett J is everything we want in a woman.  The Sweet 16 Salukis were everything we could ask for in a basketball team.  Nothing more needs to be written here.

2007-08:  18-15 :: A Disappointment

Like Britney Spears during her experimental phase, we wouldn't want to bring home an 18-15 record and a bid to the NIT home to mother, but it was better than the alternative.

2008-09:  13-18 :: The First Step Of Rehab

We wouldn't kick Lindsay Lohan out of bed for eating crackers, nor would we say no to to a bump in the road if it meant bringing in the greatest recruiting coup in school history.  Too bad the Salukis didn't develop and after harsh beatings vs. Duke and UCLA at Madison Square Garden, and another season-ending Mullins boo-boo, SIU suffered its first losing season since the end of the Rich Herrin Era.

2009-10:  13-11:  The tease.

This team has the characteristics of an ex-girlfriend of mine.  Attractive, yes.  Strong start, yes.  The crumbling finish is in the process as the SIU team that was once 9-2 and holding a lead against Illinois State in the second half is on the way to finishing below .500 in Valley play for the second straight year.

Unfortunately, that girlfriend looked nothing like Jessica Simpson.  We'd probably still be together if she did.

The Weekender Returns (Hopefully For Good)

The Weekender is back for the first time in two weeks and I'd like to show my appreciation for everyone's support by including this picture of Scarlett Johansson to kick off the festivities.

We've had a long week and plan to have a longer weekend.  We'll knock out some posts about Ryan Theriot, Kevin Gregg, Saluki basketball (and maybe football) along with a Super Bowl drinking game.

Because you can't really consider yourself a good sports blog until you have a Super Bowl drinking game that will get you drunk by halftime.

Alright, we're done.  Enjoy your day, the upcoming weekend and this blog.

OK, fine, here's a Colts cheerleader.

And for the hell of it ... random soccer cheerleader.

Oh.  We almost forgot about random screen grabs!

 Headline of the year?

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we found Crazy Uncle Milton's long lost son...

Then there's this week's video, where my even Hitler is pissed off at Chris Lowery. (Via @StileSmith)

We'll tweet the Super Bowl happenings in Miami.  Until then, say a little prayer for those who might be effected by Hurricane WhoDat.

Now, for the links.

The Weekender: Read It Because You're Snowed In Edition

It's Friday and if you're one of our long-time readers, we'll guess that you're cold and probably snowed in.  Or at least that's what you told your boss.

After a week hiatus, TBDS returned this week with some spirited blogging and some spirited commenting.  We hope it continues throughout 2010.  TBDS and its staff appreciate your support and readership.

Questions, comments, concerns, amorous letters and get-rich-quick schemes are always appreciated via e-mail.

On to what you really care about, time-wasting links and pictures of hot chicks.

Alright.  Onward and upward to the quality linkage:
    • How well do you know your Chicago Cubs HOFers?
    • No matter if you're a Texas or Alabama fan, you're going home to smokin' hot girls. Personally, I'd mess with Texas.
    • NBA Jam is returning, and suddenly I wish I would have gotten a Nintendo Wii rather than Marlon Byrd for Christmas.
    • The new collegiate semester is around the corner, these might be some of the quiz answers that helped you turn a four year ride into an eight-year commitment.
    • It's only January, but John Wall is already declaring that he will take his game to the next level.
    • It's been a while since I posted a song that I liked, so here's Big Boi's most recent offering featuring Gucci Mane.
    • Jason Whitlock says its time to stop glorifying athletes. And he's right!
    • The craziest news story about a newspaper ever? Probably. But I've got my own tales of newspapers, though not as batshit crazy.
    • The Saluki blogosphere just got a lil' more crowded with Ryan Voyles, a former understudy of mine joining the blogging from places other than mom's basement club. Check him out here.
OK gang.  Enjoy your weekend responsibly by taking shots of Jack for every mention of how much the Patriots miss Wes Welker.  (Yes, that means a NFL Playoff Drinking Game is forthcoming tomorrow.)

The Weekender: Ho! Ho! Ho! & A Bottle Of Rum Edition

It's the eve of Christmas Eve and you good people out there reading this need to go get your shopping done. For some of you, it means you have to get it started.

    Sexy Santas after the jump.

Besides, what's another few minutes of procrastination going to cost you?

As for us, we'll be in and out of it throughout the weekend.  Work will have our hands tied from Saturday on through the new year, so when you see things like "Remembering the 2000s" and "Sports Figure of the Year" in the upcoming week do not forget why.

We always appreciate what you the reader bring to this site.  Especially during the Halladay Holliday holiday season.

Oh, we've got something else coming next week.  We'll have an open thread for suggestions on how we can make the site better for 2010.  As a staff, we'll take suggestions in the comments and in our e-mail inbox.  You can also attempt to contact the editor via his e-mail.

As for the Sexy Santas ... your welcome!

The Weekender: Two Birds, One Stone, One Inbox Edition

This week inside Carrie Muskat's inbox: crap, crap and more crap.  Inside The Weekender: hot chicks.  Your call America.  Here's your Friday funday wrapped in one.

With Ted Lilly having surgery and a question mark on the Cubs' No. 5 starter, is GM Jim Hendry looking at adding starting pitching or are we hoping someone surprises us in the farm system?
    -- Matt J., Chicago

Hendry has spent as much time looking at adding starting pitching to a rotation that lost its best arm through April and its best second half starter to the Texas Rangers as he has looking at a diet guide.

The Cubs have their fingers crossed in hopes that Sean Marshall, Tom Gorzelanny or Jeff Spellcheck can take the bump every fifth day.

On the other hand, so do opposing hitters.

Why didn't the Cubs offer arbitration to Rich Harden? In spite of his injury history, he has pitched well with a great strikeout rate. His Type A status would've netted the Cubs two Draft picks. If they were concerned he would accept arbitration, they should consider that he's fairly young and probably looking to sign a multi-year deal. I just don't see the logic.
    -- Sean W., Peoria, Ill.

First of all, Harden was not a Type A free agent.  Second, Kevin Gregg was.  (Seriously.)  Someone will have to explain to me how Kevin Gregg is more valuable than Rich Harden.  Then again, it was Major League Baseball that had Roberto Clemente referred to as Bob Clemente because people weren't completely open to Latinos with dark complexion.

As for the Cubs and logic ... you should know better.  The Cubs defy logic on a yearly basis.  What's the logic behind a middle infield duo that looks like it still plays middle school baseball?  What's the logic to signing a guy who has played for seven different teams in a 10-year career to a three-year deal?

I hate to answer questions with questions, but fuck, if you've been a Cubs fan long enough you know the routine by now.

What do you think the chances are that Kelly Johnson ends up in a Cubs uniform next season? He could be an upgrade at second over Mike Fontenot or Jeff Baker. Johnson had a down year but he has the ability to go 20-20 and would slot nicely in the bottom of the order, and if he finds the swing with the speed, could slot into the No. 2 hole. I know the Cubs aren't focusing on it this year, but he's also a lefty.
    -- Nathan P., Omaha, Neb.

Kelly Johnson hit the market a year too late for Hendry's liking.  Good ol' Jimbo is over his lefty phase and has moved on to ... um ... we'll get back to you on that as soon as the Cubs GM wakes up from his turkey-induced coma.

I know the Cubs are looking to the trade market, but they may have a center-field option in the free-agent market. Rick Ankiel is a left-handed-hitting center fielder. Lou Piniella likes left-handers, Ankiel plays center, so Kosuke Fukudome can move to right, and we don't have to trade away the much-discussed prospects. Wouldn't this be a fairly safe option and have the Cubs considered it?
-- Neven C., Fort Dodge, Iowa

Here's why they shouldn't be looking at Ankiel.  He sucks.  His average, power and overall production has gone down each and every year with the Redbirds.  Sure, his defense is above anverage and he is versatile enough to play all three outfield spots, but that doesn't make him a better option.

But apparently, because his name isn't "Milton Bradley" and he's not batshit crazy, there are some goofballs out there that think he's an upgrade.  Maybe if you put him on the McGwire plan, he'll be alright.

The Cubs still have a problem with no leadoff hitter. Why not put Theriot there and leave him there? He sees a lot of pitches and has a decent batting average.
    -- Steve B., Phoenix

Steve, you're lucky I'm running through these quickly so I can get to the awesome links.  So, rather than post a long-winded respond, read one here as presented by Stat Boy in October.

From the information we know, do you think moving Spring Training to Florida would be good? There is a lot established in Arizona with close facilities, three current teams from the Central, the Arizona Fall League and a fan base.
    -- Steve P., Tempe, Ariz.

Steve P:  If moving to Florida means the Cubs will win, then the answer to your question is fuck and yes.

I remember watching Thomas Diamond a few years back when he was in the Rangers' system, and he had some incredible stuff. I was happy to find out he's with the Cubs and noticed he's putting up pretty great numbers. Is there any chance he'll be invited to Spring Training? Or could he make the team, even out of the pen? He's 2-0 in three starts with a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings and only gave up one earned run on eight hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts. If he's healthy, he could be amazing.
    -- Tom F., Anacortes, Wash.

"If he's healthy he could be amazing" sums up the following Cubs pitchers:
    • Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Rich Harden, Angel Guzman, Mike Harkey

Why was Chris Robinson overlooked as a catcher to be added to the 40-man roster? He was a Triple-A All-Star, named the Iowa Cubs' MVP and batted .326. He deserves a shot.
    -- Tim G., Bolingbrook, Ill.

Why was Chris Robinson overlooked?  Because he wasn't that good.

Now for the chicks.  Actually, it's just one chick.

    Now for the links:
    • Rihanna leaves you wanting more of something and less of something else. You be the judge.
    • Fire Del Negro? Fans of the Rooney Rule won't like this new site.
    • If Jim Hendry makes an "emergency trip" to Ohio, it will be because of this ... not because he's trying to trade Crazy Uncle Milton to Cincy or Cleveland.

School's out for winter and the kids are leaving southern Illinois to rejoin their families.  In a week, their families will be sick of them because they stay out late, their friends eat all their food and they're not cleaning shit up.

    But they'll be back.

    They always come back.

Unless, of course, they drop out.
